Free For All Friday - No. 418 - By Steve

This time next week I will be in London on the evening before the meet up. I've lost count of the number of meet ups I've been in London plus all the others in different cities around the northern hemisphere.

My organiser will have been used extensively to help me plan this trip as it always does with any other.

What part does your organiser play in arranging and planning your trips away from home?

Of course today is Friday so you are more than welcome to discuss anything organiser related. Have a great weekend.

  1. Some time ago, I've bought the new Pocket slim Nappa; now, intersted in buying another one, I cannot find any in the FF shops across EU.
What happened to the Pocket slims?

    1. I have never seen a Pocket Slim in a shop here in Denmark. I have only seen it avaliably on the internet.

  2. As soon as I know I'm going on a trip from home, I start a pack list in my planner. I tend to keep my old ones, so I first review the most recent list associated with the same or similar destination and the corresponding time of year. That list is used to create the new list (with date and location written across the top). Items are clustered or grouped together by type (electronics and chargers; biz papers; sunnies, eyeglasses and accessories; clothing; toiletries, etc.). If it's a plane trip, aside each item, I write if it's going in my carry-on bag so I can monitor how much stuff I'm trying to convince myself I want to lug around the airports before, in-between, and after flights rather than stowing in the checked bag! What was once ounces seems to be pounds then. Regardless, my planner is going in the carry-on with me! When the trip is over, I usually file the list within the calendar pages at the start of the trip, sort of journal-style.

Happy Friday to all! : )

  3. I intended to design my original weekly layout on the pages of a bound notebook for my cover with pockets. I replaced my Franklin pocket binder with the cover. However I envisioned a new insert for 2017. It is a yearly one with a large space of each day. The new format has only the days of the current year and begins on January 1. A weekly format which begins on Monday has several days of December 2016 on the first week of January 2017. Also there is no break between the months of my yearly insert but I prefer this aspect in a bound notebook.

  4. Hi there. I just bought the Lockwood slim pocket in cognac from eBay. It's brand new and boxed. Upon opening, I saw the ring component has completely come away from the binder. There is a very small film of glue residue on the binder - that amount of glue could never have held the binder in place. Should I contact Filofax and get their advice? I own a lot of Filofaxes but have never had any issues. I could try to re-glue it but is that the only thing attaching the rings to the binder (seems insecure to me)? I'm located in Australia and we have no Filofax stores here. Any advice would much appreciated. There are no repair instructions on the net. Many thanks, Star.

    1. I think you've been duped. The mechanism is NOT glued in place but held by metal lugs from a baseplate at the top and bottom. It sounds as if these had been broken off and the previous owner had tried to glue the mechanism instead. Check that the lugs haven't just been bent down for some reason but take care - they do break off if repeatedly bent. If they are broken off, the only solution is glue - but a strong contact one such as Evostick.

You need to take this problem up with the seller as you didn't buy from Filofax or an authorised stockist?

There are no longer any Filofax shops - not even in the UK.

  5. Tim, you're a gem, thanks. I thought it was very odd. I see the two lugs and they have been broken off. They're only tiny stubs now attached to the binder. The seller referred me to Filofax for assistance! These are the risks I suppose when dealing with eBay sellers...although I've bought many Filofaxes through eBay without incident. I think my best bet is to try strong glue as you've suggested. It's a planner I'll likely use infrequently on the rare occasions when I'm carrying a very small handbag. Personal size is more my thing. It is a darling Filo though, isn't it. Thanks for your prompt and helpful response. Love the Philofaxy community!
    Best regards, Star.

    1. I would take out a claim against the seller on Ebay/PayPal which ever. Clearly this item isn't new at all.

  6. I agree with Steve. However, if you don't get success I can confirm that a strong impact glue (here we have Evostick and Araldite for example) will work. I broke a lug on my Holborn Slimline two years ago. I glued it and used it daily since!
